Westlawn Cemetery, Del Rio, Texas
On Saturday. April 22, 2000, friends, family members, scouts from Troop 255 and I
completed my Boy Scout Eagle Project. My project was the renovation to the black section of
the Westlawn Cemetery. My project consisted of building 15 headstones from concrete and
placing brass name plates in the concrete. We also mowed, edged, and cleaned the plot. We then
reseeded the area and placed flowers around the gravesites. I would not have been able to
complete this project without a lot of help from the community. I would like to publicly thank
the following businesses and individuals that made my project possible:
Del Rio Funeral Home, Alamo Lumber, McCoy's Building Supply Center, and Wal Mart
for donating the supplies. Subway for donating lunch for the workers, Mrs. Cora Wood for the
flower arrangements. Mr. Mike Schillick for use of his tiller. Mr. Ted Beamer, Mr. Ed Bledsoe,
Mr. Charles Flowers, Ms. Joni Jordan, and Mr. Leroy Young for their monetary donations. The
scouts and adults who worked in the hot sun to make my project a reality: Mr. Roger Ridley,
Willie Ridley, Miss Debbie Thomas, Mrs. Donna Nair, James Nair, Mario Martinez, Ryan Perez,
and my parents. A very special thanks to Mr. Leslie Schmidt, President of the Del Rio Cemetery
Association, for allowing me to work on this project.
With their assistance we were able to fix and clean up a section of the black cemetery
making it nicer for the families of the deceased and for the community.
